Here in Edmonton, January is the month where I see a lot of people looking for big changes in their hairstyle. Now, there is nothing wrong with wanting a fresh new look for the New Year but there are a few things you should keep in mind when you come into the salon with an idea.

Trends

We turn to the runways and celebrities for the latest trends in fashion, makeup and hair. As you spend hours on Pinterest and flip through pages and pages of magazines searching for a style to love; ask yourself is what I’m looking at up to date? If you aren’t familiar with current hair trends, ask your stylist (that’s me) and be sure to add a 2015 to your Google image search.

Face Shape

Consider the shape of your face; a cut that is flattering on Halle Barry may not be as flattering on you. Search for celebrity hairstyles that share similar face shape and bone structure to you. If you aren’t sure of your face shape have a look at this chart and then in the mirror.

Hair Texture

Just like face shape, when looking for a new hairstyle, you need to know your hair type. Usually hair falls into one or more of these categories: oily, normal, dry, coarse, fine, limp, straight, wavy, curly. If you have thin, fine hair you will likely want to choose a shorter style that creates volume. If you have straight hair that tends to fall flat you will want to add body with layers. If you have coarse, curly hair, you will want to steer clear of bangs and leave length for weight.

Styling Ability and Lifestyle

Remember that celebrities don’t roll out of bed looking the way that they do in the magazines and many have stylists on hand to help with their looks. So, ask yourself, how proficient are you at styling your own hair? If you have curly hair and the style you have fallen in love with is straight, are you good at using a flat iron? Also, keep in mind, on an average day how much time do you have to get ready? Select a style that is appropriate for you skill level and lifestyle.
